Linear Algebra

University, second course

50 min / week · groups of 1 to 1

Saturdays at 11:00 AMnext on Sat 5 Sept, 11:00 AM

Linear algebra worked straight through Serge Lang's Linear Algebra, the Yale text in the Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics series. Lang is explicit in his foreword that this is a second course. It assumes you have

  • Vector spaces: bases, dimension, sums and direct sums
  • Matrices, linear equations and matrix multiplication
  • Linear mappings: kernel, image, composition and inverses
  • Scalar products, orthogonal bases, quadratic forms and Sylvester's theorem
  • Determinants, Cramer's rule and rank from subdeterminants
  • Eigenvectors, eigenvalues and the characteristic polynomial
  • Symmetric, hermitian and unitary operators and the spectral theorem
  • Triangulation, Hamilton Cayley and the Jordan normal form
  • Convex sets, separating hyperplanes and Krein Milman

Probability and Statistics

University level

50 min / week · groups of 1 to 1

University level probability and statistics, worked through from the rules themselves up to the tests an exam paper ends on. We begin with probability and independence, then random variables: distribution functions,

  • Probability rules, independence and conditional probability
  • Random variables, distribution and density functions
  • Expectation and variance, including functions of a random variable
  • Joint distributions, marginals and conditional probability from a table
  • Uniform, geometric, Poisson and normal distributions
  • The central limit theorem and approximating a sum
  • Confidence intervals and significance tests

Competition Mathematics

AMC 8 / AMC 10

50 min / week · groups of 1 to 1

Saturdays at 4:30 PMnext on Sat 5 Sept, 4:30 PM

For students who want to get stronger across every branch of mathematics and compete. We work through algebra, counting and probability, geometry and number theory, building the problem solving habits contests reward:

  • Algebra: expressions, equations and clever substitutions
  • Counting and probability
  • Geometry: angles, areas and similar figures
  • Number theory: divisibility, primes and remainders
  • Working backwards and looking for structure
  • Timed contest practice

Cambridge AS & A Level Mathematics

Cambridge AS & A Level

90 min / week · groups of 4 to 8

Sundays at 9:00 AMnext on Sun 6 Sept, 9:00 AM

Exam preparation, working straight through the Cambridge International AS & A Level Mathematics coursebook. Each lesson covers a set of pages, and the quiz that follows is built from exactly those pages, so you

  • Quadratics and functions
  • Coordinate geometry
  • Circular measure and trigonometry
  • Series and binomial expansion
  • Differentiation
  • Integration
  • Past paper practice

AMC 10 Preparation

AMC 10

90 min / week · groups of 4 to 8

Sundays at 11:00 AMnext on Sun 6 Sept, 11:00 AM

AMC 10 rests on four strands: Algebra, Counting & Probability, Geometry and Number Theory. We have already worked through the first three; this block completes the set. Working from Art of Problem Solving:

  • Divisibility, factors and multiples
  • Primes, prime factorisation and counting divisors
  • GCD, LCM and the Euclidean algorithm
  • Modular arithmetic and remainders
  • Units digits and last-digit problems
  • Number bases
  • Past AMC 10 number theory problems
